Great location for checking out the redwoods and still being in driving distance to Fortuna and Eureka.
Be sure to get a spot on the river side of the loop, or you will have a LOT OF ROAD NOISE! We were close to the road, and it was not great for sleeping. We even had to pause our campfire chat a few times while trucks passed.
Spaces are close together, without any brush in between. You will make eye contact with your neighbors from time to time. Kinda awkward for those that go to the forest for some seclusion.
This campsite is gorgeous. The sites are surrounded by large beautiful redwood trees and the Van Duzen river is close enough to hear from most sites. The river was crystal clear. Pete the State Park ranger lead an awesome fireside talk in the evening about the local wildlife. The bathrooms were clean and the sites had well maintained driveways and fire pits. The only thing that wasn't ideal is that it's close to the road and at night the cars could be loud. I felt like it was worth it.
The majesty of the Redwoods is unparalleled. Close to the filming location of the iconic Star Wars scene, this gem of a campground feels secluded. Site 14 has a clear view of the Van Dusen River. The camp host and ranger at this campground were amazing as well. Showers are warm, but I suggest bringing extra quarters.
Still our favorite State Park to camp. I kind of like the logging trucks rolling past in the wee hours of the night. But, the hiking is great. Cheatham Grove is nearby. The river is there. And, it's a short drive into Fortuna, Ferndale and Eureka.
This place is absolutely gorgeous. Spent the last 5 days there for the first time with family. My place its self is great. The rangers.. not so much. We had multiple interactions with rude rangers talking back and shutting us up when trying to talk. They constantly asked our group to take hammocks and things hanging from the tress down.. that we’re not on our site!(not ours) When coming over they pulled somebody that knows very little English then told then rest of us to shutup. This is the last time we visit this beautiful place unfortunately due to the unprofessional rude staff.
Another add on.. their website isn’t very clear on how many cars you pay for and the fee they’ll charge you for extra cars when you enter.
Clean park, wonderful people, showers that are quartered operated. Was able to wash myself and my grandbaby with 5 quarters. Bring swim shoes, river bank is rocky. There was some fun educational activities. Kida had fun. For thoses older kids, wifi is only by camp post. It goea off from 10pm to 8am. Only downfall near road on one side.
Truly a beautiful place. This campground is right off hwy 36 so if your camped on the side closest to the hwy it can be loud & busy at times. Flush toilets, showers, a visitor center (closed during our stay) There is a spot for swimming, trails to see the redwood and wildlife, lots of bird watching at the campsite.
Beautiful park, but too close to the highway for my comfort level with toddlers. We did however love the river just a short walk away! Wish we could have enjoyed the swimming hole but it was too cold! We loved the tall trees and the atmosphere. Campsites we’re spaced nicely away from other campers and they had nice fire pits for cooking on the fire. :-)
